The e-book version...
E-book is horrible due to the DRM protection software...
MY OPINION...
DRM is Digital Rights Management.
Its a generic term that refers to ‘access control’ technologies to protect copyright and to impose limitations on the usage of the content. This is the digital version of copyright, right to copy and spread or NOT.
DRM is therefore copy protection for digital content. An e-book is digital content.
When an e-book is copied and spread by others from one bought copy, its logical the writer doesn’t like it. Nobody can live from the air alone, and the writer needs at least the investments back.
So I had to secure the Genetics e-book in order not being forced to quit writing because I can’t pay the ‘energy bill’ anymore.
A simple PDF is spread amongst the readers because people just don’t respect copyright. Why pay for something if it’s ‘for free’. You can question how ‘for free’ something is.
I used special protection software, the most sophisticated at that time (2007/2008). It did work, until it was updated because Vista was born.
Next to that, there were some readers with computer problems I couldn’t solve because I am a chicken breeder not a computer professor. Where is the problem when an e-book doesn’t work?
Although everybody with a problem was very very friendly and patient, I got stressed of these problems because I couldn’t solve them.
So I did some reading on DRM and it seems to be One Big Problem despite all the customer friendly solutions. And it is sooo complicated! Adobe has also its protection, its called Adobe Digital Editions. I bought ‘my’ protection software from a company in Germany. Very friendly people and they must have been going mad by my stupidity along the process of applying the security software on the book PDF.
Anyway, when you check out the forums on Adobe.com about Digital Editions you will see exactly the same problems as I experienced. Its a lot of frustration of the users. And this is
Adobe, one of the world’s leading companies with very good products.
When I read this, I got the creeps, what am I doing with this e-book stuff. Yes, there was asked for it by lots of young breeders who just don’t have the money to buy a real (expensive) printed book.
And printing the English version of the genetics book took some time. Meanwhile I hoped to help breeders with the e-book while the printing process was on its way.
Update is shit!
Since I got an update of the e-book security software I could only sell an e-book for Vista.
I could not make any XP e-books anymore! I felt horrible towards the breeders who had a XP machine and had e.g. to reinstall the system. I could not make a password or key anymore! This frustrated me a LOT, felt guilty etc etc. No fun at all, I felt myself a fraud although I couldn’t do anything about it. It’s crazy you should buy a new computer with Vista in order to be ‘part of the world’, imo. I love my antique Macs and they work fine! It’s always the question if new is better anyway (here speaks the old lady, lol).
For the ones who ran into trouble with their XP semi ‘antique’ computer I have no other alternative than you pay extra and buy the real book.
For the ones who have bought a Vista computer I can still make keys of course, until Vista gets a successor. I won’t upgrade the (very expensive) security software anymore because this DRM technology is not ready in my opinion. Good lesson for me, don’t try to be ‘modern’, wait till a new technology is developed and proved to function.
Printing the English edition was a huge investment too of over $ 23.000,- . Am I a freak? You must be kidding... I think investing this is worth its money because of the joy this knowledge gives.
Therefore only an old fashioned real paper book with the smell of fresh ink!
You can read it offline all the time and everywhere you like.
